Sultan Nazrin Launches Book on ‘Titles and Ceremonial Traditions of the Royalty and Nobility’

Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah today launched the book 'Titles and Ceremonial Traditions of The Royalty and Nobility of the State of Perak, Malaysia' held at the Syuen Hotel.

Sultan Nazrin was accompanied by Raja Permaisuri Perak, Tuanku Zara Salim.

Also present at the ceremony was the Orang Kaya Bendahara Seri Maharaja Tan Sri Dr. Mohd. Zahidi Zainuddin, Minister of Human Resources M Kulasegaran, Speaker of the Perak  Assembly Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham and State Secretary Zainal Abu Seman.

The 1000 page book was written in English by Dr Adib Vincent Tung Abdullah and published by the Perak Academy.

Dr Adib said he first became interested in the topic during the time when the late Sultan Idris passed away and the Raja Muda, then Raja Azlan Shah was proclaimed the 34th Sultan of Perak.

“Since that time having witnessed the ceremonies related to funeral, proclamation and enthronement of Sultans I got interested and wanted to know more.

Initially I got answers from the late Panglima Kinta, Dato Seri Azizul Hassan bin Hj Abdul Rani, and Dato Seri Abdul Wahab, the Territorial Chief of Perak Tengah who was the head of ceremonies inside the Istana”.

Eventually he had to go out to interview people to understand what is Adat and so began his research which culminated after twenty years with the publication of “Titles and Ceremonial Traditions of the Royalty and Nobility of the State of Perak, Malaysia”

The book covers the Perak Sultanate since its establishment in 1528 , its rich customary rites and rituals which has withstood turbulence and survived to date that  its traditions and practices have been copied and absorbed into the royal courts of other states within our country.

The book includes the genealogies of Perak Sultans, hereditary chiefs and noblemen and also touches on topics as diverse as court etiquette, election and appointment of the Sultan, heirs presumptive, titled princes and hereditary chiefs and birth of a prince of blood royal to his eventual ascension to the throne.
