Chinese New Year Dishes a’la Hakka Cuisine

Authentic Hakka Chinese New Year dishes

I had the pleasure of attending a Hakka presentation of Chinese New Year dishes several years back.

The event took place before the New Year and was held at their Kaying Association premises.

The association ladies had prepared 8 auspicious and typically traditional Hakka dishes and brought it to the association as part of their activities before the arrival of the New Year.

Kaying Association ladies. Chairwoman Madam Yip (5th from right)

I recall the chairwoman of the section, Madame Yip gave the reason for preparing these traditional Hakka dishes was to remind the next generation that these were ‘very traditional and specific to the Hakka community with the hope that it never becomes extinct’. The dishes were great though some I had never seen nor tasted of before.

Later the committee members showed up for judging and to partake of the feast. It was an eye opening event worth remembering.

Chinese New Year .... 1982

1982 before the Chinese New Year. At the market area. Not sure if that was when Ipoh's town market was being upgraded to the present building but all stalls were on the roadside.

CNY Fourth Day

Dining in the suburbs .. with booking

On the 4th day of the Lunar Year decided to eat out for dinner. Seemed the whole of Ipoh decided to do the same. The neighborhoods have been flooded with outstation vehicles of children returning home for the reunion dinner.

Looking for food ...then waiting for a table ..

When they come home they will look out for their favorite foods which I guess was the reason for the long queues during the daytime.

But at dinnertime it was the popular diners and the touristy establishments that seemed to be prepared for the crowds.

Popular tourist alfresco place Kafe Yoon Wah on Jalan Bijeh Timah, Old Town

...serviced an entire block of diners

Other parts of  Old Town was quiet

At Jalan Yau Tet Shin, New Town another tourist spot

whole families were seen eating or

or buying foods.

But by next week it will be back to normal Ipoh.
