Anita Sarawak In Ipoh - Mid 1970's

Anita Sarawak in the 1970's ...a great performer with amazing & powerful vocals

This was Anita Sarawak in the mid 1970's. She performed at the Perak stadium. I wasn't into Malay kind of music at the time and went to specifically 1) listen to her ..a Malay entertainer  and 2) practice my photography.

This was a readers Shuib Taib 12 Dec 2023...comments...(I was there too. Thanks to my late Mom, we arrived as early as 7 pm and got the front seat on the grass where the barrier ropes were. Anita wore two outfits (red and brown) and were backed by shodancers (Lina and Malosa). Opening acts were Rafael Centenera from the Philippines (left pic), Carefree band and Bintang RTM 1976 champion, the late Datuk Sudirman Haji Arshad (right pic). There were spectators on the grand stand too so there had to be more than 200 people! This was part of her Winston Grand Tour covering Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh, Penang, Melaka and Kuantan. It was organised by the late show promoter, Mike Bernie, who later managed Sudirman's career under his company Mike Bernie entertainment. Some of Anita's songs performed were taken from her English album released in the same year, 1978 such as Hush/I'm Alive, Que Sera Sera, Jumpin Jack Flash and covers including When I Need You (made popular by Leo Sayer). I could smell her perfume where I was sitting as it was overpowering. Thanks for uploading!)

Cameras those days were very manual and one had to understand the mechanics of how it functioned. The result was blurred shots, over exposed or under exposed and for this night use of the flash photography.

What a great show it turned out to be. Anita was truly super and I was totally bowled over by her performance. She was big sized, wore gaucho pants with boots and with her powerful vocals was amazing .... i cant remember what she sang then but i became a fan after that night and my view of Malay entertainers changed ever since.

Held in the Perak stadium the crowd numbered 200.

Don't know who the guest singers were but the ....

. ...back up dancers were an eyeful. It was wonderful time in those days.
