Being Lost & Discovering Kg Kepayang (2) …..

Before I met up with the Urban Sketchers Ipoh I met with Hafidz Abdullah who works in CIMB Bank, Jalan Gopeng.

He was at his wife’s kampong gathering Rambutans. He got a plastic bag from his bike, gathered a big bunch and gave it to me…..whoopee.. before going back to gather more rambutans.

Of course I gave it to the Urban Sketchers… not before taking some of it home for desert. 

More of this kampong….. this house with nice blue lace curtains. It was so long i think it is a mansion sized.

Or this abandoned banglo sized beauty.

Or this tranquil pond which is so still it reflects the sky.

Kg Kepayang ..with the Urban Sketchers Ipoh

I joined the Urban Sketchers Ipoh last Sunday at Kg Kepayang last weekend.

They tend to make this weekly event of sketching a subject of interest into a picnic maybe a family outing, another good point about Ipoh and many things that one can do on the weekend.

This week’s subject was more than interesting. The subject house was constructed wholly different when compared to the rest of the houses in the kampong.

It resembled something that one sees in Indonesian Sumatra as if was constructed by a Mandailing.

The roof was more steep, and the round vent, the walls and camouflaged windows..

was a stark contrast to the addition behind...

Kg Kepayang is known to be settled earlier that Ipoh and orang Rawa and Mandailing were present in the area. So were they the craftsmen what constructed this house?

OLOL Church’s Christmas Tree

Our Lady of Lourdes Church on the evening of 1^st Advent unveiled a Christmas Tree measuring 55 feet in height which might just make into the Malaysia Book of Records.   

Fr Simon Anand said a prayer, blessed the tree before counting down to the launch amidst much fanfare and fireworks before a large gathering of Parishioners.

The tree was constructed by a group of parishioners led by Alexander Joseph who said the group wanted to do something for the Christmas season.  

“I got a team of ten volunteers and we found sponsors for the project.  Work started almost six weeks ago and the cost was in the region of RM25,000

 Alex regularly does Church events for the under-privileged and charitable homes and bodies.

“This time around I decided to do something fun to liven up the Christmas season and where all the parishioners could enjoy”.

Alex let on the he had applied to the have the Christmas Tree enter the Malaysia Book of Records and had already submitted the application last month.

The tree will be on display till the New Year before being dismantled and kept by. It will be used again the following year but maybe decorated on grander scale said Alex.

The tree immediately became an attraction as Parishioners were seen taking photographs and selfies against the lighted tree.

Undoubtedly Our Lady of Lourdes Church will have a brighter Christmas this year.

On Any Sunday … Ipoh Is Fun (1)

This is Cheah Chee Keong, 63, mechanic on the weekdays and cyclist on the weekends.

On Sunday morning he cycled 72 kms from his house in Bercham, Ipoh to Cameron Highlands , well 2/3 of the stretch of road from Simpang Pulai before he turned back.

“It was getting hot so before going further I decided to turn back”

He left at 7.15 am from home and was in a coffee shop Ipoh Garden South at 11am having breakfast. At 63 years that’s a pretty fast pace going uphill then returning.

I met Keong ten years ago at the Century Ride when he cycled to Kuala Kangsar from Bukit Kinding. 

This Sunday he was riding a carbon fibre racer weighing a mere 9.0 kgs …but according to Keong it is “heavy”.

Moral of the story ….. Living in Ipoh is fun, healthy and inexpensive….. it all depends of your outlook of life and of course ones health.

It’s Here …. The 1st Advent

The season of Advent has arrived. It is a joy as it is a reminder of Christ the Light of the World coming into our lives.

It is celebrated with 4 candles each representing the four Sundays of Advent.

The Parish Priest sprinkles the candle with Holy water 

The 1^st Light of Advent is called the Prophet’s Light to remind us of the Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah.

Three candles are colored in purple symbolizing the penitential season of Advent a time for repentance and renewal.

...and lights the First candle

One of the candles is Rose coloured and is called the Gaudete Candle signifying the 3rd Sunday of Advent, a Sunday of Rejoicing due to the nearness of Jesus's return.

then incenses the candle.

The evergreens remind us of the perpetual love-relationship of God for us.

Preparing For Advent (2) ... OLOL Church

Meantime at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Silibin they are readying a 55 foot Christmas Tree.

Standing at 55' will it be a contender for the 'Malaysia Book of Record' as the tallest Christmas Tree?

The launch is this Advent Sunday 3 December  at 7pm.

Advent does fill the people with the Holy Spirit to achieve their dreams.

Preparing For Advent (1)

With Christmas around the corner OMPH Church held its annual gotong-royong to get the church spick and spruced up for Advent leading up to Christmas.

 Held on Sunday 19 at 2.30 pm the afternoon saw helping and willing hands come together to mop, scrub and clean the church and its surroundings. 

Some provided their special services ....

Others lent their moral support service.

 With the church prepared the Advent décor is readied for the first mass.

Advent is roughly the four week season before Christmas when many Catholics and Christians commemorate the coming of Christ. This year Advent begins on Sunday December 3.
