The east entrance of Eu Tong Sen's Garden Villa. |
It was called Garden Villa and belonged to the estate of Eu Tong Sen, the multi-millionaire in the early 1900’s.
Eu Tong Sen's Forest Lodge |
Apparently it was supposed to be an annex to Forest
Lodge the palatial residence of Mr Eu located 200 meters east.
East to north |
The Garden Villa was used by him and his rich friends
as a private club house. It certainly appeared plausible that it was a private
clubhouse though I also heard rumor that they used to have horse racing.
The alignment of the building was that it had two entrances.
One entrance faced east and immediately opposite faced the west.
The east side entrance had two store rooms and the
toilets. The west entrance until the middle of the building was a spacious hall
with windows all around facing north, west and south side providing a panoramic
view.
Entering from the east the view is panoramic |
another panoramic view from inside |
The west entrance. Windows all around. |

The palatial Forest Lodge and stately Garden Villa...the Eu wealth and lifestyle of the early 1900's |
Which made me wonder how big was the Eu Tong Sen
estate then. Was it the whole of and what is now Chateau Garden and beyond.
We read about the wealth that Eu Tong Sen’s businesses
had generated those days from tin and rubber and what not was certainly
substantial and would have enabled such a lifestyle.
So was it fabulously wonderful time. Your guess is as
good as mine.
End.
