The Perak
State government and Ipoh City Council initiated a program to plant 2590 shady
trees around Ipoh. It was launched by State Exco for Tourism YB Tan Kar Hing
yesterday.
All the
trees are sponsored and are of the variety Merawan Siput Jantan and Penarahan.
It was selected to complement the heritage buildings in Old Town, provide
greenery, being easy to maintain and is pleasant to the eye and reduces the urban
heat currently being experienced.
The balance
2500 trees will be located within a 2 Km radius at Old Town, New Town and Taman
DR and will be completed before the end of the year.

The first 90
trees were sponsored by philantrophist Foo Wan Thot. The selected locations at
Old Town are along Jalan Bandar Timah, Jalan Bijeh Timah and parking areas
behind Ho Yan Hor gallery within the vicinity of Concubine Lane.
Tan added
the state Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) would also beautify and
upgrade Sungai Kinta for tourism and recreation.

The DID
would raise their ‘Rubber Dam’ located on the river close to Wisma Kuala Lumpur Kepong which
would raise the water level on the river and provide recreation for water
activities for approximately 1Km starting from the YMCA.
Ipoh City
Council will upgrade the existing bicycle path and illuminate the entire stretch
of Kinta Riverwalk.

Describing the
Kinta River as a harmonious river he said there are three mosques, three
Chinese temples and a Hindu temple and there are birds and small animals that
frequent the area.

He added that
at end April Tourism Perak would organize a food festival and coffee festival
at Kinta Riverwalk and further promote the river. Called the River Kayakking
Program we want people to re-imagine the purpose of the river.
